Life and Artistic Formation
Born in Graz, Austria, Franz Ringel was the son of a stable hand and a washerwoman. After being raised by foster parents at the age of nine, his artistic talent and interest in literature were nurtured by his foster mother, Margarete. His formal education began at the Kunstgewerbeschule Graz, where he studied ceramics from 1955 to 1959. He later pursued studies at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna under Hans Knesl and subsequently studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1960 to 1965 under Albert Paris Gütersloh.
In 1968, Ringel became a founding member of the group Wirklichkeiten, which held an exhibition at the Vienna Secession. His work often focused on human figures, depicting themes from classical Greek literature or the depths of the human unconscious. His paintings are characterized by thick, heavily applied colors and figures that some find unsettling due to the depiction of numerous limbs.
Evolution of Style and Legacy
In 1980, Ringel transitioned his signature to M. J. M. Ringel, a change representing the three most important women in his life: his foster mother Margarete, his biological mother Juliane, and his wife Maria. Following Maria's death in 1983, he produced the book achtundsiebzig Bilder für Maria, which was recognized as one of the finest books in Austria.
Throughout his career, Ringel received several honors, including:
He passed away in Graz and was buried in the Central Cemetery in Vienna.
