Early Life and Artistic Training

Edwin Boyd Johnson was born on November 4, 1904, in Watertown, Tennessee. His early years were shaped by a move to Nashville, Tennessee, where he completed his primary and secondary education. This Southern upbringing provided the foundation for a career that would eventually span painting, design, muralism, and photography. His technical development began in earnest when he enrolled at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he studied from 1925 to 1930. This period established the formal discipline required for his later large-scale public works.

His training expanded beyond the American Midwest through rigorous study at the National Academy of Design in New York City. This academic grounding was supplemented by significant international exposure. In 1931, a scholarship provided by the Bryan Lathrop Foreign Traveling Scholarship allowed Johnson to move beyond domestic traditions. He traveled to Europe and North Africa to master the complexities of fresco painting. His studies took him to the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna, the Atelier de Fresque in Paris, and the École Égyptienne des Beaux-Arts in Alexandria, Egypt.

This international education gave Johnson a technical versatility that few of his contemporaries possessed. By combining the structured methods of the National Academy of Design with the specialized fresco techniques learned in Vienna and Paris, he developed a command over large-scale surfaces. This specific training in muralist methods would define his professional output during the coming decades.

Murals and Federal Art Commissions

Johnson’s legacy is anchored in the public spaces of the New Deal era. He became a significant figure within the Federal Art Project, utilizing WPA funding to secure commissions that placed his work in the daily lives of Americans. His output during this period was prolific, moving between the monumental scale of civic buildings and the intimate settings of local post offices. In 1936, he executed a mural for the City Hall in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, establishing a presence in the public architecture of the Midwest. This was followed by his 1937 work, Airmail, located in the Melrose Park Library in Chicago. These projects were not merely decorative; they were functional components of a national effort to document the American experience through large-scale painting.

His ability to handle diverse subject matter is evident in the geographic spread of his commissions. He moved from the urban centers of the Midwest to the rural landscapes of the South and the frontier of the West. In Dickson, Tennessee, his work People of the Soil captured a specific regional identity, even if the piece is no longer accessible to the public. His reach extended to the Tuscola, Illinois, post office, where he completed The Old Days in 1941. This period of high productivity also included a specific assignment for the government's Alaskan project. There, he painted scenes intended to promote the protection of the wilderness, proving his utility as a visual communicator for federal conservation interests.

Later Years and Death

The conclusion of Johnson's career was marked by a significant shift in medium and geography. During World War II, he served as an honorary member of the United States Armed Forces. This period of service preceded a decisive change in his creative output. Once the war ended, he relocated to Mexico City. This move was not merely a change of scenery; it signaled a departure from the large-scale mural work and oil painting that defined his earlier years.

In Mexico City, Johnson redirected his technical focus toward photography. He moved away from the public commissions and the heavy application of paint to embrace the precision of the lens. This transition reflects a practical evolution in how he chose to document and interpret his surroundings. He remained active in this capacity until his death in 1968 in Nashville.
