The Architect of Visual Form

Born in Svit pri Poprade, Dušan Baláž has spent decades navigating the intersection of graphic precision and expressive painting. His early years were defined by a rigorous formal education, studying between 1976 and 1980 under the guidance of academic painter Július Hegyesi. This period established the technical foundation upon which his later, more independent explorations would be built. Before establishing himself as a free agent in the art world, he spent thirty-three years contributing his technical expertise to the Košice studio of Slovak Television, working as a visual artist, graphic artist, and animator.

The transition from a structured career in television to the life of an independent artist occurred in 2002. This shift allowed for a deeper immersion into the mediums of drawing, graphics, and painting. His work often reflects a preoccupation with the psychological and the structural, a tendency seen in pieces such as Nightmares from 1999. His practice is not merely a solitary pursuit but a communal one, deeply rooted in the cultural landscape of Slovakia.

A Life of Artistic Organization

Baláž’s influence extends beyond the canvas and into the very infrastructure of the regional art scene. He has acted as a catalyst for other creators, ensuring that the creative pulse of Košice remains steady through various organizational roles. His commitment to the community is evidenced by several key contributions:

• Member of the Club of Visual Artists Medzibodrožia - TICCE.
• Member of the Association of Independent Visual Artists ARTEFAKT in Bratislava.
• Organizer of the Cassovia Sculpture Garden international sculpture symposium.
• Organizer of the Cassovia Painter Garden international painting plein air in 1997 and 1998.

Through these efforts, he has helped foster environments where both established and emerging artists can find a platform. His work with international symposia and plein air events has brought a broader perspective to the local scene, bridging the gap between individual practice and collective growth.
