A life in miniature

André Pujos lived his days between the quiet corners of Toulouse and the busy streets of Paris. Born around 1738, he moved to the capital at twenty-two, bringing with him the training of the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Toulouse. His hands were accustomed to the small, precise movements required for miniature painting and drawing. By 1759, his presence was felt in the Parisian art circles, where he began exhibiting his work.

His domestic life was anchored in Paris, specifically near the Quai Pelletier. He lived in a house on the rue des Postes, a place near l'Estrapade that he shared with his wife, Marie-Thérèse Colin. This home, inherited from her family, became the setting for his later years. There is a certain stillness in the records of his life, punctuated only by the occasional legal friction, such as an accusation regarding the unauthorized sale of a portrait of the marquise de Villette.

The precision of the line

The work of Pujos focused on the face and the subtle details of character. As a miniaturist and draftsman, he specialized in portraiture, capturing the likenesses of the people who moved through his era. His drawings possessed a delicate quality that others noted for its truthfulness. He did not rely on large canvases but worked within the intimate scale of portraits that could be held in the hand.

Many of his original drawings found new life through the hands of engravers. These translations allowed his likenesses to reach a wider audience:

  • Louis Legrand, who helped spread his imagery through print.
  • Simon-Charles Miger, who worked on engravings after Pujos's subjects.
  • Vincenzio Vangelisti and Thérèse-Éléonore Lingée, among others who interpreted his lines.
His subjects included notable figures such as Jean le Rond d'Alembert and Pierre Clément Grignon, appearing in line engravings that preserved the features he had first captured on paper.

A lasting presence in collections

Though his life ended in 1788, the traces of his hand remain in several institutions. His portraits are not merely forgotten sketches but are held within permanent collections where they can still be studied. These works reside in:

  • Musée Fabre in Montpellier.
  • Musée Paul-Dupuy in Toulouse.
  • École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, which holds a portrait of an elderly woman wearing a bonnet.
  • Musée Carnavalet.
The survival of his work through the decades is partly due to the persistence of those around him; after his death, his widow continued to sell his drawings, ensuring that his small, detailed visions of the eighteenth century remained in circulation.
