Mary Elizabeth Richardson, later known as Mary Elizabeth Tripe or Mollie Tripe, was born into a prominent New Zealand family. Her father's political career led the family to Wellington, where she pursued her artistic education at the Wellington School of Design. She demonstrated early promise and excelled in her studies, earning advanced qualifications that allowed her to pursue both an artistic and teaching career.
Tripe's artistic style evolved over time. While she began with Impressionistic influences, she developed a reputation for her realistic portraits. Her skill in capturing likenesses and conveying character made her the preferred artist for many prominent New Zealand figures. She was known for her meticulous attention to detail and her ability to create compelling representations of her subjects.
Beyond her painting, Tripe made significant contributions as an art educator. Her teaching at the Wellington School of Design helped shape a generation of artists. She was particularly influential in mentoring Hinehauone Coralie Cook, whose career flourished under Tripe's guidance. Her involvement with the National Art Gallery demonstrates her commitment to promoting and preserving New Zealand art.
