Born on August 9, 1955, in Gardners Corner, South Carolina, Jonathan Greening is a celebrated American painter and printmaker. He stands as one of the most important contemporary artists capturing the essence of the Southern experience.
Greening was raised amidst a large family – the second of seven children – and profoundly shaped by his grandmother, who instilled in him a deep understanding of the Gullah dialect. This creole language, spoken in the coastal regions of the South, became a cornerstone of his artistic vision. His upbringing immersed him in the rich cultural heritage of the Lowcountry, providing a wellspring of inspiration for his future work.
Following high school, Greening served in the United States Air Force before pursuing formal art training. He attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1982. This period broadened his artistic horizons while solidifying his commitment to representing his Southern roots.
