The canvas holds a large blue shape, a heavy weight that settles like a mountain range or a thicket of leaves. Around this center, patches of green and white drift through the space. A bright yellow border cuts across the top, its edges spiky and irregular from a sudden splash of paint. The surface is not smooth; it is a textured terrain where the pigment has seeped into the unprimed fibers.
The technique relies on the soak-stain method, where diluted acrylic flows into the fabric. This process allows colors to bleed and merge without hard outlines. There is no depth here, only the flatness of the weave and the way the light hits the saturated layers. The edges remain unfinished, leaving raw patches of canvas visible.
Created in 1964, this work belongs to the era of Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting. It rejects the need for a realistic horizon or a recognizable sky. Instead, it offers an experience of pure form. The composition feels spontaneous, as if the shapes were caught in a moment of movement before they could settle.
The blue mass provides a focal point that anchors the lighter, more fluid elements. There is a tension between the controlled geometric frame of yellow and the loose, organic drips of paint. It is a landscape of the mind, stripped of trees or earth, leaving only the emotional resonance of color. The eye moves through the washes of pigment, finding no place to rest.
A quiet stillness remains in the wake of the splash.
