Born in the historic landscape of Avignon in 1699, Alexis Peyrotte emerged from a lineage of craftsmanship as the son of a sculptor. This early exposure to the tactile world of form and structure would later inform his unparalleled ability to decorate the grandest stages of French history. His formative years were spent amidst the parishes and congregations of Carpentras, where he developed a meticulous eye for detail while capturing religious narratives with a precision that hinted at his future mastery. It was during this period that he collaborated with Joseph Duplessis, contributing to the delicate art decorations within the pharmacy of the Hôtel-Dieu of Carpentras, a task that required both technical skill and an understanding of how art integrates into functional, sacred spaces.
The year 1736 marked a pivotal transformation in Peyrotte’s destiny as he relocated to Paris, the beating heart of the European artistic avant-garde. In the bustling atmosphere of the capital, his talents transcended regional religious commissions to embrace the opulent demands of the French monarchy. He quickly ascended the ranks of the decorative arts, securing prestigious contracts that would place his brushwork within the very halls of power. His work for Louis XV and Marie Antoinette at Versailles in 1738 and 1747 remains a testament to his ability to translate royal grandeur into visual splendor, crafting interiors that breathed with the light and luxury of the Rococo era.
Peyrotte’s artistic identity was defined by an exquisite ability to harmonize monumental scale with delicate ornamentation. His collaborations were often with the most significant figures of his age, such as Charles-André van Loo, with whom he worked on the breathtaking Board Room of the Palace of Fontainebleau. This period of his career showcased a masterful command of perspective and color, ensuring that every surface—from ceiling to wall—served a cohesive aesthetic vision. His influence extended to the Château de Marly, where his decorative touch helped define the sophisticated atmosphere of one of France's most legendary residences.

Here, he oversaw the decoration of tapestries, a medium that allowed him to weave narrative and emotion into intricate patterns.
