ethel n. adnan, a lebanese-american poet, essayist, and visual artist, was born in beirut in 1925 to a greek mother from smyrna and a damascus-born father, a high-ranking ottoman official. her eclectic background laid the groundwork for her diverse artistic expressions. she studied philosophy at the university of paris, the university of california, berkeley, and harvard university.
adnan's artistic journey is marked by her unique blend of poetry, essays, and visual art. from 1958 to 1972, she taught the philosophy of art at the dominican university of california in san rafael, lecturing at various universities across the united states. her return to lebanon saw her working as a journalist and cultural editor for al safa newspaper in beirut.
al-hallaj, qasaid, a piece showcasing her experimentation with japanese paper, is a testament to her versatility.
