An outlier in the art-historical canon, Mangelos abandoned traditional mediums and forms of expression in favor of a playful, at times ironic, ethos of “anti-art.” Using the written word as his primary material, he aimed to shift our attention from art’s physical substance to its philosophical meaning. The conceptual quality of his work challenges our assumptions about the forms art can take.This child’s chalkboard displays a single invented word: “noart.” The artwork has particular significance for Mangelos as it was the only object presented in the artist’s self-conceived retrospective, a type of exhibition that typically represents the full breadth of an artist’s career.

dimitrije bašičević, a renowned yugoslavian artist, curator, and art critic, was born on april 21, 1921, in šid, serbia. he pursued his higher education in art history and philosophy at the university of vienna and later at the university of zagreb.
bašičević's artistic production encompassed a wide range of mediums, including handmade books, sculptures, and paintings. his work significantly contributed to the development of abstract art in croatia. notably, his research and writings on art had a profound impact on the yugoslavian art scene.
completed a phd in 1957 on the topic of sava šumanović's work worked as a curator and assistant at the yugoslavian academy of art and science * founded the peasant art gallery in 1952, which later became the gallery of primitive art, where he served as curator until 1964 * appointed as chairman of the center for film photography and television, part of the museum of contemporary art, zagreb, in 1971
bašičević's writings on photography and art were frequently published, reflecting his dedication to promoting yugoslavian art. he retired in 1982 and passed away on december 18, 1987.
