Desmond Morris lived a life defined by two seemingly different worlds: the rigorous study of animal behavior and the dreamlike realms of surrealist painting. For much of his life, Morris's dual identity as a scientist and an artist existed in parallel. While he was busy presenting television programmes like Zoo Time and writing about human sociobiology, his paintings continued to evolve in private. It was not until later years that the breadth of his visual work received wider recognition. His paintings eventually found homes in significant collections, including the Tate in London and the National Galleries of Scotland.
By the time he passed away on 19 April 2026, he was recognized as one of the last surviving artists of the original Surrealist movement.
