Віктор Михайлович Васнецов – видатний російський живописець, графік, ілюстратор книг та театральний декоратор, відомий своїми релігійними картинами та архітектурними проектами в стилі неоросійського. Він був старшим братом художника Аполлінарія Васнєцова і відіграв ключову роль у формуванні російської мистецько-естетичної культури кінця XIX – початку XX століття, поєднавши традиції народної творчості з новаторськими тенденціями свого часу. Його твори стали символом національної самосвідомості та глибини російського духу.
Народився 12 травня (3 травня за старим стилем) 1848 року у віддаленому селі Лопаль, що на території Вятської губернії, в сім’ї священника. Батько, Михайло Васильович Васнєцов, був філософською нахиленою людиною та вивчав природничі науки та астрономію. Дід художника був іконописцем, що вже з дитинства познайомило Віктора з традиціями російського мистецтва. Ранній інтерес до малювання розвивався під впливом батьківського дому та близького контакту з народною культурою Вятської землі.
Спочатку Васнецов планував стати священником, навчаючись у Вятському семінарії.
