His technical proficiency was recognized early when he received the first prize for drawing from antique figures in 1852. Seeking further refinement, he traveled to Paris to study under Jules Coignet. Bourson’s professional journey included exhibiting at the Salon de Bruxelles in 1857 and the Salon in Paris in 1861. Beyond his own practice, he served as a drawing teacher at the Athénée Royal de Bruxelles and eventually succeeded Henri Hendrickx as the director of the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Saint-Josse-ten-Noode.
