A Master of the Jiangnan Landscape
Zhao Gan was a Chinese painter active during the second half of the tenth century, originating from Nanjing. As a member of the painting academy at the court of the last emperor of the Southern Tang, Li Houzhu, he served as a student at the Imperial Painting Academy. He was specifically recognized for his skill in depicting the waterways of the Jiangnan region, particularly the river scenes of the area surrounding Jinling.
His artistic legacy is preserved through his surviving works, most notably the horizontal silk scroll titled Early Snow on the River. This work utilizes a composition of depth at eye level to present a vast fluvial panorama, capturing the atmosphere of a grey expanse of water where islands and boats are set against a wash of ink.
Technique and Visual Detail
In his depictions of river life, Zhao Gan demonstrated a keen observation of the daily activities of fishing families. His work is characterized by a focus on material details, including:
To achieve the appearance of soft, thick snowflakes on silk, the artist used a technique of blowing white pigment through a screen to lightly project it onto the surface. The resulting imagery portrays the harsh conditions of fishermen shivering in their boats or under shelters amidst the falling snow. The composition is marked by a delicate execution with few heavy outlines, reflecting the stylistic qualities of the Jiangnan landscape.
