Early Life, Family and Training
Toni Roth was born in Munich, Germany, into a family where visual art was the primary language. His lineage provided a direct link to the technical traditions of the era. He was the son of the Munich painter Alois Roth, and his brother, Karl Roth, worked as a medallist. This domestic environment ensured that his development was rooted in professional practice from the beginning. He began his training as a pupil of his father and W. Lindschmit, absorbing the fundamental mechanics of his craft through direct mentorship.
His formal education moved from private instruction to the rigorous structure of the Academy of Munich. During his studies, Roth worked under the guidance of Marr, Jank, and Doerner . This academic progression provided him with a diverse technical foundation, moving from the personal guidance of his father to the institutional standards of the Academy. His training was not merely about aesthetic development but about mastering the specific disciplines required of a professional painter in Munich.
Professional Career and Teaching
Roth’s professional trajectory was anchored in Munich, where he established himself as a painter. His influence extended into the institutional structures of the era, specifically through his administrative role in 1937. During that year, he served as the deputy head of the Munich Werkprüfungs- und Forschungsanstalt. This position placed him at the center of technical artistic research and examination within the city's academic framework.
His academic standing was formalized through a professorship. On April 20, 1939, he was appointed professor, a distinction granted on the occasion of Adolf Hitler 's 50th birthday. This appointment solidified his authority within the pedagogical landscape of the time. Beyond the formal structures of Munich, his teaching reached into the Salzburg Summer Academy Kokoschka, where he functioned as a professor and instructor.
Patrons and Exhibitions
Roth’s presence in the official art landscape of the National Socialist period was documented through his membership in the Reichskammer der bildenden Künste. His visibility was not merely incidental; he was a frequent participant in large-scale exhibitions, with at least 18 major shows recorded. These appearances placed his work directly within the curated currents of the era, ensuring his technical proficiency reached the highest levels of contemporary collectors.
The patronage he received during this time was significant and tied to the Great German Art Exhibitions in Munich. His output attracted the attention of the highest political figures in Germany. Between 1937 and 1943, Adolf Hitler acquired eight of his paintings. Additionally, Joseph Goebbels purchased two works from these Munich exhibitions. Such acquisitions by the regime's leadership confirm that Roth's aesthetic met the specific demands of the state's cultural apparatus during those years.
Notable Artistic Works
Roth’s output demonstrates a disciplined command over varied formats, from intimate studies to large-scale compositions. His 1944 oil on canvas , Still Life with SunflowersSommerblumenstrauß in einem grünen Keramikkrug , a much larger work on canvas at 148 x 100 cm. These pieces show a consistent interest in the structural qualities of floral arrangements.
The artist also worked extensively on panel, utilizing the rigid support for more figurative or thematic subjects. The Seduction , an oil on panel measuring 65.5 x 52.5 cm, remains a significant example of his ability to handle narrative tension within a confined space. In contrast to these larger efforts, his Portrait of a boy is a much smaller oil on panel , measuring only 15 cm. This scale requires a different level of precision, focusing on the essential characteristics of the subject without the distraction of expansive scenery.

Roth’s professional network was anchored by his close associations with Max Doerner and Max Raffler. These connections were not merely social; they were deeply integrated into the technical discourse of the era. Roth’s influence extended into the academic and instructional realm through his work as an editor. He managed the publication of Doerner ’s Malmaterial und seine Verwendung im Bilde , overseeing the text through its 13th edition. This role placed him at the center of technical discussions regarding the practical application of painting materials.
His pedagogical impact is most clearly seen in the work of his students. During the 1930s, Karoline Wittmann attended his painting class, focusing specifically on the rigorous discipline of copying Old Masters to master their technical execution. The results of this instruction remain tangible in her estate, which contains several copies of works by Rubens, including Die glückliche Regierung . This lineage of technical study highlights a commitment to the formal mechanics of painting that defined his instructional method.
