Born in Bath, United Kingdom, Thomas Jones Barker was born into a family of artists. His grandfather, Benjamin Barker, was an enamel painter and expert at painting sporting and animal figures, while his father, Thomas Barker , was a prominent painter. Barker’s artistic journey took him to Paris in 1834, where he studied under Horace Vernet . During his time in France, he became a frequent exhibitor at the annual Paris Salon, showing twenty-eight paintings between 1836 and 1850. He was known for creating large-scale panoramic images featuring numerous figures, often based on actual portraits. Beyond the battlefield, he was a portrait painter of notable figures and specialized in large gatherings of officials and celebrities.
