Suresh Muthukulam: Preserving the Soul of Kerala Muralism

Born in 1971 in Muttukulam, a small hamlet nestled within the Alappuzha district of Kerala, India, Suresh Muthukulam – also known as S. Suresh Kumar – is more than just an artist; he’s a custodian of a profoundly rich and ancient artistic tradition. His journey is one of dedicated apprenticeship, tireless practice, and a deep reverence for the intricate world of Kerala mural painting. From his humble beginnings, Muthukulam has risen to become a leading figure in preserving and promoting this unique art form, captivating audiences both within India and across the globe.

Muthukulam’s artistic path began at a remarkably young age. Unlike many artists who receive formal training later in life, he was immersed in the techniques of Kerala muralism from childhood. Raised as the sixth child to K. Sukumaran and Pulamaja, his early exposure to the vibrant colors and symbolic narratives inherent in these paintings laid the foundation for his lifelong dedication. He began painting independently at a very young age, demonstrating an innate talent that quickly blossomed under the guidance of master artists.

The Gurukula Tradition and Early Training

Crucially, Muthukulam’s artistic development was shaped by the innovative gurukula system established by the Guruvayur Devaswom – a traditional monastic institution. This unique training model, emphasizing direct mentorship and rigorous practice, proved instrumental in his mastery of Kerala mural techniques. He spent years learning directly from master artists, absorbing not just the technical skills but also the philosophical underpinnings and spiritual significance embedded within each brushstroke.

His formal education extended beyond the Guruvayur Devaswom, including a diploma in Painting at the Modern Fine Arts School in Mavelikara and a degree in Kerala mural painting tradition from the Institute at Guruvayoor Devaswom. Prior to his current role as Chief Mural Artist at Vasthuvidya Gurukulam, he served as a visiting lecturer at the Raja Ravi Varma College of Fine Arts in Mavelikara, further solidifying his understanding and appreciation for the art form.

A Palette of Tradition: Techniques and Symbolism

Muthukulam’s work is instantly recognizable by its vibrant colors derived entirely from natural pigments – a deliberate choice that reflects a deep respect for tradition and an intimate connection to the land. He meticulously employs the ‘wash’ technique, layering translucent colors to create luminous effects and intricate details. His paintings are not merely decorative; they are imbued with profound symbolism drawn from Hindu mythology, folklore, and devotional texts.

The subjects he chooses – deities like Shiva, Vishnu in his various avatars, and Ganesha – are rendered with a captivating blend of realism and stylized elegance. His depictions of village life, often interwoven with religious themes, offer glimpses into the rich cultural tapestry of Kerala. The meticulous attention to detail, particularly in the depiction of flora and fauna, adds layers of complexity and visual richness to his compositions.

Global Recognition and Continuing Legacy

Suresh Muthukulam’s dedication has garnered significant recognition both nationally and internationally. He has conducted numerous workshops and exhibitions across India and abroad, sharing his knowledge and passion with a wider audience. His work has been exhibited at prestigious venues, including the Vatican Museum, a testament to its artistic merit and cultural significance.

Notable achievements include being gifted “The Last Supper,” painted in traditional Kerala mural style, to the Vatican Museum by the Kerala Government – a profound acknowledgment of his contribution to art. His work on Mahatma Gandhi’s Salt March is also part of the Gandhi Museum Collection in New Delhi. Beyond these prominent examples, his murals grace temples and hotel lobbies throughout twelve different countries, spreading the beauty and wisdom of Kerala muralism across the globe.

Today, Muthukulam continues to live and work in Kerala, actively involved in preserving this ancient art form through Vasthuvidya Gurukulam. His commitment extends beyond his own artistic practice; he is a dedicated teacher, mentor, and advocate for the continued vitality of Kerala mural painting – ensuring that this extraordinary legacy endures for generations to come.
