Maxime Dethomas was a French painter, draughtsman, printmaker, illustrator, and theater-set and costume designer. Born in the Paris suburb of Garges-lès-Gonesse, he studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs and later received instruction at the private workshop of Henri Gervex and at the Académie de La Palette under Henri Gervex, Puvis de Chavannes, and Eugène Carrière.
His artistic output included vigorous drawings and oil paintings featuring portraits, cafe scenes, and urban landscapes of Italy and Spain. He worked with various mediums, such as:
Dethomas served as the director of services plastiques, overseeing set and costume design for several institutions, including the Théâtre des Arts and the Paris Opera. His work for the stage emphasized line and colour over painted detail. He also designed programmes, exhibition posters, and advertising posters.
