Farhanna Pura: Bridging Tradition and Modern Luxury
Born in Brunei Darussalam, Farhanna Pura’s artistic vision stems from a deep connection to her cultural heritage – the vibrant traditions of Malay and Chinese communities interwoven into the fabric of Bruneian identity. This formative experience profoundly shaped her approach to fashion design, resulting in the creation of Na Forrer, a brand dedicated to crafting contemporary couture infused with timeless elegance.
From an early fascination with 90’s pop culture and chic cityscapes – particularly inspired by Spice Girl’s impeccable style – Farhanna recognized the potential for fashion to empower women and celebrate individuality. Recognizing her innate talent for styling and tailoring, she pursued a marketing degree at Hertfordshire University, honing her understanding of consumer behavior and strategic branding. Her subsequent career in change management provided invaluable insight into organizational dynamics and honed her observational skills, further fueling her creative process.
The genesis of Na Forrer’s distinctive aesthetic can be traced back to Farhanna's admiration for power dressing – the confident silhouettes and assertive tailoring championed by influential figures. She sought to translate this inspiration into garments that catered to diverse body types while subtly communicating sophistication and refinement. Driven by a passion for meticulous craftsmanship, Farhanna meticulously selects fabrics like Songket, Brunei’s iconic silk and gold thread weaving tradition, elevating each piece with artistic embellishments.
A pivotal moment in Farhanna's creative journey was the conception of “Baju Kebaya,” a traditional Malay dress symbolizing femininity and grace. This reimagined couture design incorporates elements of Bruneian heritage – specifically a corset crafted from Songket fabric – traditionally worn by brides and grooms during ceremonies and royal occasions. The boxy shoulder represents empowerment and modernity, reflecting Farhanna’s commitment to honoring tradition while pushing stylistic boundaries. Collaborating with artist Lully Selb on the euca silk design adds another layer of artistic expression to each garment.
Farhanna Pura's contribution extends beyond mere fashion; she champions sustainable practices within her brand, prioritizing ethical sourcing and minimizing environmental impact. Her dedication to empowering women through beautifully crafted clothing underscores her belief in the transformative power of art and design—a legacy that continues to inspire creativity and innovation in Brunei and beyond.
