    O ovom umetničkom delu

    S. João Baptista — Rui Sanches

FORM AND AUSTERITYMadame Récamier segundo David is a sculpture with a clearly defined past indicated in its title: the heir to a painting by David, dating from 1800, by Jeanne-Françoise Julie Adélaïde Bernard Récamier, the epitome of beauty, literary refinement and intellectual independence; in short, the femme du monde who survived, in her vicissitudes, the Revolution and Bonapartism. The portrait by David (the painter of Napoleon, a dubious, virtuoso creature) came two years before the portrait of Madame Récamier painted by Gérard and much longer before the versions in painting (in 1957) and in sculpture (ten years later) by Magritte, and also had come before La grande odalisque by Ingres. It is a painting that marks out a period, a style and an ideology. Madame Récamier is lying on an empire divan, wearing that neo-classical version of a dress that spread pneumonia in Napoleon’s court. Rui Sanches’s sculpture is a volumetric and de-eroticised conversion of the portrait, with the attention concentrated on understanding the compositional mechanism of the painting, converted into an analytical construction, poor in materials and neo-classical in its construction. Rui Sanches chose a very curious and strange path for his sculpture since the eighties; he took neo-classicism as his working field and transformed rigour of composition into poor, structural construction, bringing together a sculptural language coming from the avant-gardes of the first half of the century and an interest in its exact opposite, the formalism of the neoclassical universe. This union brought about a thesis on form, a rereading of the anti-ethical universes that served it as tools and material, a synthesis between an austerity of material (worn pine wood, sometimes the supreme irony of bronze painted white) and the Napoleonic and imperial reference of his models. This duplicity would open up a path to a work that would increasingly move towards a theory of form, then to a deliberate articulation of historical references through a theory of volume taken as the essential component of sculpture.Mariana Viterbo Brandão

The Sculptural Alchemy of Rui Sanches

Born in the vibrant cultural landscape of Lisbon in 1954, Rui Sanches has spent a lifetime navigating the delicate intersection between what is remembered and what remains visible. His journey toward becoming a preeminent voice in contemporary sculpture was not a linear path through the arts, but rather a profound intellectual evolution. Before dedicating himself to the tactile reality of form, Sanches pursued medical studies, an academic foundation that perhaps instilled in him a lifelong fascination with the underlying structures of life and the anatomical essence of existence. This scientific curiosity eventually gave way to a rigorous artistic training, spanning from the Ar.Co in Lisbon to the prestigious Goldsmiths’ College in London, culminating in an MFA from Yale University in 1982. Supported by the esteemed Gulbenkian Foundation, Sanches emerged with a unique perspective: one that views art not merely as decoration, but as a surgical deconstruction of history and identity.

The early years of his career were marked by an intense investigation into the very nature of the image. Sanches began by analyzing painting genres, seeking to understand how visual narratives are constructed and subsequently dismantled. This intellectual rigor led him away from the two-dimensional plane and toward the three-dimensional mastery of industrial and organic materials. His work became a sophisticated dialogue between eras, where the weight of the past meets the starkness of the contemporary avant-garde. Through his sculptures, he explores themes of memory, time, and perception, often stripping away the superficial layers of classical beauty to reveal a skeletal, analytical truth beneath.

    Deconstructing Elegance: Form and Materiality

To encounter a work by Rui Sanches is to witness a masterful synthesis of opposing philosophies. He possesses a rare ability to bridge the gap between the rigid formalism of neo-classical traditions and the experimental, often raw spirit of modernism. His technical approach is characterized by an austerity of material, where he utilizes elements such as worn pine wood, textiles, and bronze—sometimes even painting bronze in a striking, stark white to strip it of its traditional opulence. This process of "analytical construction" allows him to transform historical references into something entirely new and hauntingly modern.

One of his most profound achievements lies in his ability to perform a sculptural "conversion" of famous artworks. In pieces such as Madame Récamier, Segundo David, Sanches does not simply replicate the elegance of Jacques-Louis David’s iconic portrait; instead, he performs a daring act of deconstruction. He removes the lushness and eroticism of the nineteenth century, replacing it with a volumetric exploration of space and volume. By doing so, he invites the viewer to look past the romanticized surface of history and contemplate the structural mechanisms that hold our cultural narratives together. His work functions as a bridge, where the bones of history are laid bare for contemporary contemplation.

A Global Presence and Lasting Legacy

Sanches’s influence extends far beyond the borders of Portugal, as his career has been defined by an international presence in some of the world's most significant art arenas. His participation in prestigious biennials, such as the São Paulo Biennial, and exhibitions in cities ranging from Tokyo to Vienna, underscores the universal resonance of his themes. From the Winnipeg Art Gallery to the Serralves Museum in Porto, his work has consistently challenged audiences to reconsider the relationship between art history and contemporary existence.

The significance of Rui Sanches lies in his refusal to let history remain static. Through his hands, the past is not a museum piece to be preserved in amber, but a living, breathing entity that can be dismantled, reassembled, and reimagined. His legacy is found in the quiet tension of his sculptures—the way a heavy bronze might feel weightless, or how a piece of weathered wood can carry the gravity of centuries. He remains an artist who does not merely create objects, but creates spaces for profound thought, urging us to find the enduring truth within the ever-changing forms of our world.

Fenar savremodobene kreacije: Culturgest – vibrantno srce Lisabona

Dizajn zgrade otelotvoruje duh otvorenosti i inkluzivnosti, ogledajući širu posvećenost Culturgest-a negovanju različitih glasova i perspektiva.

Posvećenost Culturgest-a prevazilazi puko izlaganje umetnosti; on aktivno zastupa proučavanje, promociju i kuriranje svojih postavki.
