    The Architect of Imaginary Ecosystems

To step into the world of Graeme Base is to cross a threshold between the tangible natural world and the boundless realms of the subconscious. Born in 1958 in Amersham, England, before relocating to Australia at the age of eight, Base has spent his life cultivating a visual language that bridges the gap between meticulous biological realism and the most whimsical of fantasies. His artistic journey is deeply rooted in an early fascination with the wonders of the natural world—a passion famously ignited by the rugged charm of Tasmanian devils. This foundational love for observation would later become the bedrock of his technique, allowing him to render even the most impossible creatures with a sense of anatomical credibility that makes them feel as though they truly breathe.

Base’s creative evolution was shaped significantly by his formal training and the literary giants who preceded him. While pursuing studies in graphic design at Swinburne University of Technology, he absorbed the storytelling prowess of artists such as Maurice Sendak and Brian Wildsmith. From these masters, he learned that a truly captivating illustration does more than merely decorate a page; it carries emotional resonance and drives a narrative forward.

Answer in your own words. There are no wrong answers here — only answers you can explain.

    1. What catches your eye first, and why?
    2. Which colours or shapes create the mood — and what is that mood?
    3. How many faces can you find? ____ (our catalogue counts 3 — do you agree?)
    4. Look back at Artworks of the Cover and Title for The Eleventh Hour, earlier in this guide. Name two things it shares with this work, and one that is different.
    5. What might the artist have wanted you to feel?

    Your response

Write a short paragraph about this artwork. Use the facts from the earlier parts of this guide, and your answers above.
