Kunstmuseum Brandts

The Industrial Transformation of Odense

The architecture of Kunstmuseum Brandts is rooted in its history as the Brandts Klædefabrik, a textile factory that began in the mid-1700s. What started as a small dye works in Vestergade 73 eventually expanded into a sprawling industrial complex that defined the urban fabric of Odense. The site underwent significant changes over a century, eventually closing its production lines on December 31, 1977. Following this closure, the massive brick structures sat vacant for several years before being repurposed for cultural use. The current layout integrates these historic factory halls with modern additions, including the Portbygning and the high-ceilinged Det Dobbelthøje Rum, which was specifically designed to accommodate large-scale works.

The physical space reflects a transition from labor to observation. The expansion completed in 2004, designed by Kjær & Richter, introduced concrete and glass elements that connect the old factory buildings via a three-story glass bridge. This architectural dialogue between the heavy industrial past and contemporary transparency defines the visitor experience across the five floors of the institution.

The Permanent Collection and Artistry

The holdings within the museum reflect a focus on Danish art and various movements of the last two centuries. The collection includes works that examine light, form, and the human condition through diverse technical approaches. The following pieces represent significant entries in the catalog:

The works of Anna Ancher and Harald Giersing are particularly prominent, offering a study in how different eras approached color and subject matter. While Ancher’s studies capture domestic moments, Giersing’s portraits and dancers explore more structured, modern compositions. The presence of Eckersberg’s maritime scenes provides a historical anchor to the collection, documenting the naval history of the region through precise, observational painting.

Institutional Structure and Scope

Since July 2013, the institution has functioned as a unified visual arts center, merging the former Kunsthallen Brandts, Museet for Fotokunst, and Fyns Kunstmuseum. This merger allows for a broad scope of programming that spans contemporary art, photography, and media history. The museum operates as a self-governing entity, supported by Odense Kommune and various private foundations. Beyond the galleries, the site includes a dedicated Formidlingscenter for art and education, a specialized media workshop, and Brandts Shop, which serves as the only art bookstore in Funen.
