A Surrealist Emergence

Brussels, 1912. The air in the Baes household carries the scent of oil paint and history. Rachel Baes enters a world shaped by her father, Émile Baes, an artist known for his eroticized female nudes and late Impressionist touch. There is no formal academy for her, only the quiet encouragement found within the walls of a home dedicated to the visual arts.

The year is 1929. At seventeen, the transition from student to exhibitor occurs at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris. The scene shifts from the private studios of Brussels to the intellectual friction of the Parisian avant-garde. Here, she finds herself positioned within a circle of radical thought, moving among figures like René Magritte, André Breton, and Max Ernst. Her presence is marked by an alignment with the Surrealist group, a movement that seeks to bridge the gap between dream and reality.

Shadows and Connections

The mid-1930s bring a shift in personal and political gravity. Between 1936 and 1940, Baes lives through an intense affair with Joris Van Severen, the leader of the far-right Verdinaso party. The tension of this era culminates in the sudden violence of May 1940. As German troops invade Belgium, the political landscape fractures. Van Severen is arrested and later killed during the Abbeville massacre alongside other Belgian prisoners. This period of upheaval leaves a permanent mark on her narrative, later reflected in her 1965 publication, Joris Van Severen, une âme.

Her brush captures more than just the surreal; it records specific, often dreamlike, human presences. In 1950, she produces a portrait of Paul Léautaud, set in a dreamlike environment that the subject himself reportedly detests. The work exists in that strange space between the sitter's reality and the artist's vision.

The Quiet Years in Bruges

By 1962, the public eye recedes. Baes retreats to Bruges, settling into Huize 't Haentje, a building now known as Hotel Malleberg. The frantic energy of the Parisian Surrealist circles is replaced by the local subjects of her new home. She lives in solitude, painting the surroundings of her Belgian retreat until her death in 1983.

Her legacy remains tied to the resurgence of interest in female artists during the late 20th century. In 2002, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp brings her work back into the light, presenting it alongside Jane Graverol. The recognition of her place in the Surrealist movement is solidified not through grand declarations, but through the enduring presence of her canvases in collections such as the Flemish Art Collection.
