Biography

Early Life, Family and Training

Alexej von Jawlensky was born on 13 March 1864 in Torzhok, Russia. He was the fifth child born to Georgi von Jawlensky and his wife, Alexandra. His early years were marked by movement, as his family eventually moved to Moscow when he was ten years old. This change in environment was a significant part of his upbringing, shaping his perspective long before he ever picked up a brush for professional study.

His path toward art was not immediate. Before committing to a life of painting, he spent time in military training. However, a visit to the 1882 Moscow World Exposition changed his direction.
