Philip Alexius de László, narodený ako Fülöp Laub 30. apríla 1869 v Budapešti v Maďarsku, vypracoval sa z prostých začiatkov až na slávneho portrétneho maliara európskej kráľovskej rodiny a aristokracie. Jeho rodičia, Adolf a Johanna Laubovci, boli švadrob a švadrovka židovského pôvodu. Svoju umeleckú dráhu začal ako učeň fotografa, čo mu neskôr pomohlo v precíznosti jeho tvorby. Uspešne sa dostal na Národnú akadémiu výtvarného umenia v Budapešti, kde študoval pod vedením majstrov ako Bertalan Székely a Károly Lotz. Ďalšie štúdium v Mníchove a Paríži mu následne rozšírilo umelecké obzory a formovalo jeho vizuálny jazyk.
Raná tvorba de Lázla prejavovala ostré oko pre detail a čoraz greater ovládanie realizmu. Jeho inšpiráciou boli akademické tradície osvojené na akadémii, ako aj vtedajšie dominantné trendy v portrétnej tvorbe konca 19. a začiatku 20. storočia. Rýchlo sa odlíšil schopnosťou zachytiť nielen fyzickú podobnosť, ale aj osobnosť a spoločenský status svojich modelov. Zlomovým okamihom bol rok 1900, kedy mu portrét pápeža Levo XIII. priniesol Veľkú zlatú medailu na Paríske medzinárodnej výstavke, čím si definitívne vybojoval celosvetovú uznanie.
Po úspechu v Paríži sa de László v roku 1903 presunul do Viedne a následne sa v roku 1907 usadil v Londýne, kde zostal až do konca svojho života. Stal sa vysoko vyhľadávaným portrétistom medzi európskou elitou. Jeho klientela zahŕňala monarchov, šľachtu, industrialistov, vedcov aj významné osobnosti z rôznych oblastí.
V roku 1900 si de László oženil Lucy Madeleine Guinness, ktorá pochádzala z významnej bankárskej rodiny. Spolu mali šesť detí a sedemnásť vnukov. Po svojej manželskej spravodlivosti sa po predchádzajúcom záujme o katolicizmus stal anglikánom. Napriek svojmu britskému občianstvu a stabilnému životu v Anglicku však počas Prvej svetovej vojny (1917–1918) čelil internovaniu kvôli podozreniu z jeho rakúskej príslušnosti, čo preň bolo obdobie veľkého utrpenia.
