Born in 1895 in the remote coastal village of Øster Assels on the island of Mors, Denmark, Jens Andersen Søndergaard’s life and art were inextricably linked to the raw power and beauty of the North Sea. His early years amidst the rugged landscape profoundly shaped his artistic vision, instilling a deep reverence for nature that would become the cornerstone of his expressive style.
Influenced by his father, Anders Søndergaard, a local painter who transitioned into bicycle sales, Jens inherited an appreciation for visual representation and a nascent understanding of color and form – though he quickly forged his own distinct path.
