Artistic Development and Career

During the American Civil War, he enlisted in the Confederate Army, serving under General Wade Hampton. Two of his most recognized works – depicting scenes from rural Southern life – were reproduced as chromolithographs by Currier and Ives, significantly expanding their reach.
