Patril medzi „Whitechapel Boys“ – skupinu umelcov z East Endu, ktorí sa objavili na začiatku 20. storočia.
Ako syn polsko-židovských imigrantov, Abrahama a Rebeky Bombergovej, začal svoju cestu študovaním na City and Guilds Technical Art School, predtým než si v Birminghamu odpracoval remeslo litografa.
Svoju umeleckú dráhu formoval pod vedením Waltera Sickerta na Westminster School of Art (1908–1910), pričom bol hlboko ovplyvnený Sickertovým zameraním na tvary a mestský život. Kľúčovým momentom bola jeho konfrontácia s dielom Paula Cézanneho prostredníctvom výstavy Rogera Fryho „Manet a postimpresionisti“ v roku 1910. Jeho tvorbu formovali londýnske výstavy talianskych futuristov z roku 1912 a Fryho druhá postimpresionistická výstava (zahŕňajúca Picassa, Matisseho, fauvistov či Wyndhama Lewisa).
Vytvoril si vlastný, nezamiteľný štýl spájajúci kubizmus a futurizmus – prejavujúci sa geometrickými kompozíciami, obmedzenou farebnou paletou, uhlovatými postavami a mrežovinovými štruktúrami.
Jeho radikálny prístup bol v roku 1913 dôvodom jeho vylúčenia zo Slade School of Art, keďže jeho metódy boli považované za príliš odvážne pre konvenciálne prostredie tejto inštitúcie.
Krátko bol spojený s Omega Workshops skupiny Bloomsbury a vystavoval v rámci Camden Town Group. Hoci prejavoval zblíženosť k vorticistickému hnutiu Wyndhama Lewisa, zachoval si svoju nezávislosť a odmietol plnú angažovanosť do tohto smeru.
Od vojny k krajine: Zmena umeleckého smeru
Z experiences ako prostého vojniaka počas prvej svetovej vojny zásadne ovplyvnili jeho umeleckú víziu, čo viedlo k postupnému odklonu od abstrakcie.

V období od roku 1945 do 1953 vyučoval na Borough Polytechnic (dnes London South Bank University), kde ovplyvnil celú generáciu umelcov, vrátane Franka Auerbacha, Leona Kossoffho, Philipa Holmesa, Cliffa Holdena, Edny Mannovej, Dorothy Meadovej, Gustava Metzgera, Dennisa Creffielda, Cecila Baileyho a Milesa Richmonda.
Bol manželom krajinárskej maľarky Lilian Holtovej.
Napriek období relatívnej neznámosti počas svojho života získalo Bombergovo dielo v posledných desaťročia čoraz väčšie uznanie ako významný prínos britského moderného umenia.
Na jeho počesť nesie budova David Bomberg House na London South Bank University jeho meno.
