early life and artistic career

roberto feleo, a renowned filipino painter, was born in 1950 in manila, philippines. his artistic journey began with an innate passion for figurative expressionism, which would later become the hallmark of his style.

rise to prominence

feleo's big break came in 1994 when he was awarded the cultural center of the philippines' thirteen artist awards. this recognition not only elevated his status within the filipino art community but also opened doors to a broader, international audience. his works, characterized by intense subjectivity and rough handling of materials, began to be widely exhibited and highly sought after at auctions.

artistic style and influences

feleo's style is deeply rooted in figurative expressionism, a movement that emerged as a reaction against the conceptual and minimalist art of the 1970s. this approach, characterized by its intense subjectivity and the return to portraying recognizable objects like the human body in a rough and violently emotive manner, resonated deeply with feleo.

key influences: the figurative expressionism movement, which emphasized subjective experience and emotional depth, significantly influenced feleo's work.
notable works: while specific works by feleo are not detailed in available sources, his contributions to the figurative expressionist movement are notable for their emotional intensity and innovative use of materials.

legacy and remembrance

feleo passed away in 2018, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most celebrated filipino painters of his time. his impact on the art world, particularly within the southeast asian community, is undeniable. for those interested in exploring more of feleo's work or learning about other influential artists, roberto feleo's page on WahooArt.com serves as a comprehensive resource.
