The Chronicler of Christiania

The streets of old Christiania do not simply exist in Henrik Backer’s work; they are captured in a state of transition. Born in Lillestrøm, Backer moved through a Norway that was rapidly reshaping itself, and his brush often sought to freeze the moments before the wrecking ball arrived. After the First World War, he turned his attention to the disappearing textures of the city. Through watercolors and oils, he documented the architecture and the atmosphere of a world that was being replaced by the modern era. He was a man preoccupied with the visual identity of his surroundings, working as an illustrator and a painter to preserve the specific light and layout of the streets.

His vision extended beyond the canvas and into the very fabric of public life. He was a decorator of spaces, bringing his aesthetic to the interiors of the city's social hubs. His work appeared in the following settings:

  • The restaurant Olympen in 1928
  • Tractøren in 1929
  • The Rosenborg cinema in 1937

These commissions required a different kind of scale, moving from the intimate detail of a watercolor to the expansive requirements of a public room. He understood how art functioned within a social environment, whether it was a quiet corner of a cafe or the grand walls of a cinema.

A Life of Detail and Decoration

Backer’s technical range was defined by his ability to adapt to the medium required by the moment. He was as comfortable with the fluid, translucent nature of watercolor as he was with the heavy, structural presence of oil on canvas. This versatility allowed him to move between the roles of a fine artist and a decorator. In 1928, his oil painting Gateparti captured the urban landscape of Oslo, a cityscape that remains a record of the era's movement. He even stepped into the realm of film, serving as a decorator for the 1920 production Kaksen på Øverland.

His contributions to Norwegian culture were recognized not through the lens of abstract theory, but through the tangible impact of his work on the national landscape. In 1935, he was awarded the King's Medal of Merit in Gold, a distinction that acknowledged his long-standing service to the visual and cultural life of the country. He died in Oslo in 1948, leaving behind a body of work that serves as a visual archive of a nation in flux.
