    Об этом произведении

    A ∩ B ∩ C — amalia pica

In her 2011 work Venn Diagrams (under the Spotlight), a forerunner toA ∩ B ∩ C, Amalia Pica uses overlapping circles of colored light to refer to her childhood in 1970s Argentina. During this period, the country’s military junta forbade the concept of intersection from being taught in elementary classes, concerned that even its mathematical representation might ultimately prompt citizens to conspire against it. InA ∩ B ∩ C, Pica invites performers to manipulate translucent colored shapes, producing new configurations that, emancipated from the historical anecdote, use abstraction and intersection as an invitation to reimagine forms of collaboration and community.

The Architecture of Connection: The Art of Amalia Pica

Born in 1978 in Neuquén, Argentina, Amalia Pica emerged from a landscape defined by the profound shadows of the "Dirty War." This period of state terrorism and political repression in her homeland did more than just shape her early years; it became the silent architect of her artistic inquiry. Growingard amidst such turbulence, Pica developed an acute sensitivity to the fragility of human connection and the ways in which language can both liberate and imprison. Today, as a London-based artist, she translates these heavy historical echoes into a vibrant, multidisciplinary practice that spans sculpture, installation, performance, and drawing, always seeking to bridge the gap between the individual and the collective.

Pica’s formal journey began at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes Prilidiano Pueyrredón in Buenos Aires, where she earned her BA in 2003. This foundational period was marked by an immersion into conceptual frameworks that would later define her aesthetic. Her education was further enriched by a prestigious residency at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam, an experience that expanded her technical vocabulary and global perspective. Throughout her development, she has drawn deep inspiration from the giants of Latin American conceptualism, including Victor Grippo, Cildo Meireles, Lygia Clark, and Hélio Oiticica. From these masters, she inherited a commitment to experimentation and a belief that art should function as a critical dialogue rather than a mere object of contemplation.

    Symbols of Intersection and Resistance

At the heart of Pica’s oeuvre lies a fascination with the concept of the intersection—a visual and mathematical metaphor that carries immense political weight. In her evocative work, such as A ∩ B ∩ C, she explores the geometry of overlapping forms to reference a specific historical trauma: the prohibition of Venn diagrams in Argentine elementary schools during the military dictatorship. The junta feared that even the mathematical representation of overlapping circles might inspire citizens to contemplate the power of conspiracy and collaborative thought. By reclaiming this shape through translucent Perspex and colored light, Pica transforms a symbol of suppressed thought into an invitation for communal reimagining.

Her practice often utilizes seemingly humble or found materials to investigate the complexities of communication. Whether through the use of colorful bunting or delicate projections, she plays with the tension between proximity and distance. In her performance piece Strangers, she uses strings of bunting to create physical barriers that both link and separate participants, forcing a confrontation with the difficulty of achieving true intimacy in a crowded world. This mastery of material allows her to turn abstract concepts—like the act of delivering or receiving a message—into tangible, sensory experiences that resonate deeply with the viewer's own social reality.

    A Legacy of Civic Engagement

The historical significance of Amalia Pica’s work lies in its ability to navigate the delicate boundary between personal memory and public discourse. She does not merely document history; she uses the tools of abstraction to interrogate how we inhabit civic spaces today. Her installations act as laboratories for social interaction, where the viewer is often an active participant in the construction of meaning. Through her meticulous attention to detail and her ability to weave together disparate elements—light, shape, sound, and movement—she creates a space where the ghosts of political repression are met with the hopeful energy of contemporary assembly.

As her career continues to flourish on the international stage, Pica remains a vital voice in contemporary art, reminding us that the structures we build—be they mathematical, sculptural, or social—are the very things that define our capacity for empathy and collective action. Her work stands as a testament to the enduring power of communication to reshape the world, one intersection at a time.
