Thomas Stothard (17 August 1755 – 27 April 1834) was a British painter, illustrator and engraver. Born in London, the son of an innkeeper in Long Acre, Stothard’s early life was marked by a delicate constitution, prompting his relocation to Yorkshire at the age of five and subsequent schooling at Acomb and Tadcaster. His apprenticeship with a draughtsman specializing in brocaded silk patterns introduced him to the meticulous techniques of decorative arts—skills that would prove invaluable throughout his career. This collaboration birthed the “Arcadian” style—characterized by luminous palettes, delicate brushwork, and an idealized portrayal of pastoral life.

Fielding’s productions were immensely popular, capturing the spirit of Romanticism with unparalleled grace and precision. Stothard’s oeuvre comprises approximately five thousand oil paintings—a testament to his unwavering dedication to the craft. Among his most significant works are The Canterbury Pilgrims, housed in Tate Britain, and Vintage, a masterpiece admired for its masterful use of color and texture.

His artistic vision extended beyond easel painting; he undertook ambitious decorative projects, including the frescoed staircase at Burghley House and the dome of Edinburgh’s Advocates’ Library—demonstrating his ability to transform architectural spaces into immersive experiences. Ralph Nicholson Wornum estimated that Stothard’s designs numbered five thousand and, of these, about three thousand were engraved. His oil pictures are usually small. His colouring is often rich and glowing in the style of Rubens, who Stothard admired. The Vintage painting is considered one of his finest achievements.

Stothard's contribution to Shakespeare’s Gallery was particularly noteworthy—a collaborative effort with Flaxman that aimed to elevate the visual arts alongside literature.
