Ramses Younan (1913–1966) remains one of the most profound and enigmatic figures in the history of modern Egyptian art. Born into a modest Coptic Christian family in Minya, his early life was shaped by the landscapes of the Nile and a deep-seated intellectual curiosity that would eventually lead him far beyond the boundaries of academic tradition. While his formal training began at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo, Younan’s spirit was too restless for the confines of classical instruction. In 1939, he became a foundational pillar of the Art et Liberté (Art and Liberty) group, a radical collective of artists, writers, and intellectuals in Cairo.
