In 1778, the financial instability caused by the American Revolutionary War led to the insolvency of his employer, Richard Champion, effectively ending Pocock's career at sea. By 1782, his works were being exhibited by the Royal Academy, marking the beginning of a distinguished career in both oils and watercolour.
