Unul dintre „Whitechapel Boys” – un grup de artiști din East End care au apărut la începutul secolului al XX-lea.
Născut din părinți imigranți polonezi de origine evreică, Abraham și Rebecca Bomberg, artistul a studiat inițial la City and Guilds Technical Art School, înainte de a se specializa ca litograf în Birmingham.
A studiat sub îndrumarea lui Walter Sickert la Westminster School of Art (1908-1910), fiind influențat de accentul pus de Sickert pe formă și pe viața urbană. O expunere semnificativă la opera lui Paul Cézanne a avut loc prin intermediul expoziției din 1910 organizată de Roger Fry, intitulată „Manet and the Post-Impressionists”. A absolvit Slade School of Art (1911), unde a câștigat Premiul Tonks pentru desenul său realizat după colegul de studii, Isaac Rosenberg.
Anii Avangardei: Cubism, Futurism și Controverse
La Slade, Bomberg a făcut parte dintr-o generație remarcabilă, alături de nume precum Mark Gertler, Stanley Spencer, C.R.W. Nevinson și Dora Carrington.
A fost influențat de expozițiile din Londra din 1912 ale futuristilor italieni și de a doua expoziție post-impresionistă a lui Fry (Picasso, Matisse, Fauviștii, Wyndham Lewis).

A dezvoltat un stil distinctiv care combina Cubismul cu Futurismul – caracterizat prin compoziții geometrice, palete de culori limitate, figuri angulare și structuri asemănătoare unei rețele.
Abordarea sa radicală i-a dus la excluderea din Slade School of Art în 1913, fiind considerat prea îndrăzneț pentru metodele convenționale ale instituției.
A fost asociat scurt cu Omega Workshops din grupul Bloomsbury și a expus alături de Camden Town Group. A arătat o afinitate cu mișcarea vorticistă a lui Wyndham Lewis, dar a ales să rămână independent, refuzând o implicare totală.
De la Război la Peisaj: O Schimbare de Stil
Experiențele trăite ca soldat de rang simplu în timpul Primului Război Mondial i-au impactat profund viziunea artistică, conducându-l spre o îndepărtare de abstractism.
Anii 1920 au marcat adoptarea unui stil mai figurativ de către Bomberg, concentrându-se pe portrete și pe peisaje desprinse direct din natură. Artistul a dezvoltat o tehnică tot mai expresionistă, marcată de un impasto texturat și de o intensitate emoțională profundă.
Călătoriile sale extensive prin Orientul Mijlociu (în special în Palestina) și prin Europa și-au influențat semnificativ opera ulterioară. Reprezentările sale ale Ierusalimului sunt deosebit de remarcabile.
Anii Ultimii și Moștenirea
În perioada 1945-1953, a predat la Borough Polytechnic (astăzi London South Bank University), influențând o întreag constituție de artiști, printre care Frank Auerbach, Leon Kossoff, Philip Holmes, Cliff Holden, Edna Mann, Dorothy Mead, Gustav Metzger, Dennis Creffield, Cecil Bailey și Miles Richmond.
S-a căsătorit cu pictorița de peisaje Lilian Holt.
În ciuda perioadelor de relativ obscuritate din timpul vieții sale, opera lui Bomberg a câștigat o recunoaștere tot mai mare în ultimele decenii, fiind considerată o contribuție semnificativă la arta modernă britanică.
Casa David Bomberg de la London South Bank University îi poartă numele în semn de onoare.
