Fabritius was born into an artistic family; his father, Pieter Carelsz. Fabritius, and brothers Johannes and Carel were all painters. He received initial training from his brothers, and it is widely believed that he also studied under the renowned Rembrandt van Rijn. While the specifics of this apprenticeship remain somewhat unclear, the influence of Rembrandt's dramatic use of light and shadow, as well as his psychological depth in portraiture, are evident in Fabritius’s work.

Fabritius primarily focused on biblical subjects—such as "The Presentation in the Temple" and "Abraham Dismissing Hagar and Ishmael"—mythological narratives, and historical scenes.
