Born in Istanbul, Turkey, Albert Bitran was a French painter, engraver, and sculptor. After studying at the French Collège Saint Michel, where he earned diplomas in both French and Turkish, he was admitted to the Ecole Spéciale d’Architecture in Paris. However, at seventeen, he chose to pursue painting over architecture, moving into a studio at the American pavillon of the Cité Universitaire. During this time, he joined a circle of expatriated artists in Montparnasse. His early work explored a strict, geometric language, experimenting with almost optical drawings on paper using colored pencils. Over the following decades, his expression evolved toward an informal, gestural, and lyrical abstraction.
Bitran’s career was marked by a deep engagement with various themes and techniques. In the 1960s, his major themes included Landscapes, The Studio, Inside-Outside, Laterals, and Verticals. By the 1970s, he focused on "Doubles," an analytic interrogation of his painting. His later years saw him revisiting themes from his childhood and travels in Turkey, specifically the form of the Arcades, and exploring the major color black. Throughout his career, he worked extensively in graphics, including etching and lithography, and experimented with mixing oil, ink, fusain, and pastel on paper and cardboard.
Throughout his life, Bitran participated in numerous exhibitions worldwide, including shows in France, Turkey, England, Scandinavia, Holland, Austria, and the United States. His work has been featured in several notable venues and collections, such as:
Bitran held the distinction of being an Officier des Arts et Lettres. He passed away in Paris, France.
