Early Life and Training in Ireland
James Forrester entered the world in Dublin, Ireland, in 1729. His early years in the city provided the foundation for a life spent observing the natural world. During this time, he began to develop his skills as a painter, finding a place within the local artistic community. He spent time working with the Society's School of Drawing in Dublin, an experience that helped shape his early technical abilities and his understanding of composition.
His time in Ireland was marked by a brief but focused career. While he was active in the Dublin art scene, his professional life in his homeland remained relatively short. He was part of a creative era in Georgian Dublin, a period when many artists were finding their footing in various media. Despite the limited duration of his stay in Ireland, his presence in the local circles of painters was established before he eventually sought new horizons elsewhere.
Life and Activity in Italy
In 1755, Forrester left the familiarity of Ireland behind and moved to Rome. This move marked the beginning of a long chapter in his life, as he would spend the final twenty years of his existence within the Italian peninsula. He did not simply settle in one place; instead, he traveled extensively throughout the country. These travels allowed him to study the land closely, seeking to understand the specific light and terrain that defined the Italian landscape.
His time in Italy was defined by this constant movement and observation. He sought to familiarize himself with the natural world through direct experience, wandering through various regions to capture the essence of the scenery. This period of his life was dedicated to the study of the outdoors, focusing on the quiet details of the terrain he encountered during his travels. He remained in this environment until his death in Rome in 1776.
