The Alchemy of Healing and Memory
Born in Vitória, Brazil, Castiel Vitorino Brasileiro occupies a unique space where the boundaries between psychology and visual expression dissolve. As an artist, writer, and psychologist, her practice is not merely about the creation of objects but about the construction of tools for healing. Her work serves as a profound exploration of decoloniality, addressing the deep-seated wounds left by racism, colonialism, and heteropatriarchy. By intertwining Afro-Brazilian spirituality with psychological research, she creates immersive experiences that seek to mend the fractures caused by historical and social violence.
Her creative process is deeply rooted in her academic background, having earned a BA in Psychology from Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo and pursuing an M.A. in Clinical Psychology at Pontifíca Universidade Católica de São Paulo. This dual identity allows her to approach art through the lens of Bantu-Kongo cosmograms and ancestral memory. She utilizes spiritually active materials—such as soil, salt, charcoal, stone, water, light, and cloth—to form installations that act as mandalas for spiritual continuity. In her vision, life is a series of continuous deaths and rebirths, a spiral movement of time that she captures through tactile and elemental mediums.
A Visceral Language of Resistance
The power of Brasileiro’s work lies in its ability to bridge the gap between historical trauma and modern visceral expression. Her pieces often confront the viewer with raw, unbridled emotion, stripping away peripheral distractions to force an intimate encounter with the human form and its histories. One might encounter works that utilize stark contrasts and intense color theory—such as a pulsating red background against the pale visibility of teeth—to mimic the physiological response to fear or sudden revelation. This technique serves to tap into a universal language of distress and the breaking of silence, echoing the heavy weight of secrets and the vulnerability that follows their exposure.
Her artistic narrative is often anchored in historical contexts, such as the harrowing accounts of the Inquisition in Northeast Brazil during the late sixteenth century. Through her art, she brings private struggles into the light, transforming the internal experience into an external, shared reality. This process of transmutation is central to her identity, as she seeks to navigate and incorporate a Bantu ontology that challenges the arbitrary categorizations of race, gender, and birthplace used by colonial power structures.
