Biography | Javier Orfón
Javier Orfón was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico (1989), a city steeped in the legacy of colonialism and marked by ongoing crises—themes that permeate his artistic vision. From an early age, he demonstrated a profound connection to the natural world and a fascination with traditional crafts, influences that would shape his distinctive approach to sculpture, illustration, and experimental printmaking. This duality – the confrontation with historical burdens alongside reverence for ancestral traditions – consistently informs his creative process.
His formal education began at Universidad de Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture in 2013. During this period, he honed his skills through intensive studio practice and engaged with critical discussions about contemporary art and its role in addressing social issues. Notably, he participated in the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2022), fostering collaboration and experimentation within a supportive artistic community. This experience solidified his belief in dialogue as crucial to artistic growth—a conviction that continues to guide his explorations into new mediums and conceptual frameworks.
Orfón’s artistic trajectory gained momentum with his third solo exhibition, *El Ojo de Arcilla*, held at Hidrante Art Space in Santurce, Puerto Rico, in 2020. This event solidified his reputation as a rising talent within the Puerto Rican art scene and showcased his commitment to exploring themes of identity and materiality. The centerpiece of this exhibition was a series of sculptures crafted from locally sourced clay—a deliberate gesture honoring Puerto Rico’s rich ceramic heritage while simultaneously questioning notions of permanence and representation. Subsequent exhibitions include *La Casa de Las Almas* curated by Abdiel Segarra Ríos at Espacio Cómplices in Madrid (Spain), 2022; *No existe un Lugar en el Mundo Poshuracán: Puerto Rican Art in The Wake of Hurricane Maria*, presented at the Whitney Museum of American Art (2022-2023); and *El Momento del Yagrumo* organized by Marina Reyes Franco at Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico (2021). These projects underscore Orfón’s dedication to confronting urgent social realities through artistic expression—a commitment rooted in his belief that art possesses the power to provoke reflection and inspire action.
A pivotal moment arrived with his selection as a Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellow in 2023, recognizing his artistic merit and furthering his creative development. This fellowship provided invaluable resources for pursuing ambitious research projects and experimenting with innovative techniques—a testament to Orfón’s unwavering pursuit of artistic excellence. He was invited by Anamas Proyect to participate in ARCO Madrid (2024), demonstrating the international recognition of his work. Currently residing between San Lorenzo and Caguas, Puerto Rico, Javier Orfón continues to refine his craft—a process driven by a profound respect for both tradition and innovation—solidifying his position as one of Puerto Rico’s most compelling voices in contemporary art.
