Whether his roots reached back to France or were firmly planted in English soil remains a subject of debate among those who study his life. He emerged into the light of the art world with a remarkable gift for the draughtsman's craft, possessing an eye that could find the structural truth in a crumbling wall or a sweeping meadow. Without the formal scaffolding of a documented education, he relied upon the discipline of observation, honing a technique that would eventually allow him to document the very bones of the English landscape.

    His path took a significant turn when Sir Joseph Banks, the President of the Royal Society, recognized the value in Nattes' precise hand. Between 1789 and 1797, the artist undertook a massive undertaking, traveling through Lincolnshire to record its architectural character. This was no mere sketching; it was an exhaustive census of stone and timber.
