**early life and artistic career**
roberto feleo, a renowned filipino painter, was born in 1950 in manila, philippines. his artistic journey began with an innate passion for
figurative expressionism, which would later become the hallmark of his style.
**rise to prominence**
feleo's big break came in 1994 when he was awarded the
cultural center of the philippines' thirteen artist awards. this recognition not only elevated his status within the filipino art community but also opened doors to a broader, international audience. his works, characterized by intense subjectivity and rough handling of materials, began to be widely exhibited and highly sought after at auctions.
**artistic style and influences**
feleo's style is deeply rooted in
figurative expressionism, a movement that emerged as a reaction against the conceptual and
minimalist art of the 1970s. this approach, characterized by its intense subjectivity and the return to portraying recognizable objects like the human body in a rough and violently emotive manner, resonated deeply with feleo.
