The Life of Jasper Broers

Born in Antwerp to a lowly family, Jasper Broers was orphaned of his father at only four months old. Under the guidance of his mother, Suzanna Jegers, he began his artistic journey at the age of thirteen, studying under the landscape and battle painter Jan Baptist van der Meiren. By 1703, he had achieved the status of a master within the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke. His personal life was marked by his marriage to Catharina Verdussen on 27 June 1704, though the couple remained childless. Throughout his life, Broers faced a weak constitution, eventually drawing up a will in 1713 due to illness. He passed away in Antwerp and was laid to rest in the St Andrew Church.

Artistic Style and Subject Matter

Jasper Broers established himself as a leading battle painter in Flanders during the first two decades of the 18th century, specializing in landscapes and allegorical compositions. His work often focused on cavalry engagements at close range, set against sweeping and dramatic landscapes. He frequently painted battle scenes in pairs using a horizontal format, strategically placing action at opposite sides of the canvases to create a sense of open space in the center.

His technical approach included:

  • The use of dramatic cloud formations, transitioning from dark gunpowder fumes to sun-lit spring clouds.
  • The depiction of light effects from fire and smoke, particularly in nightfall scenes.
  • A preference for close-up, dramatic perspectives rather than bird's-eye views.

Beyond his battle pieces, Broers is known for painting a cycle representing the months. His drawings are characterized by an angular and edgy application of the pen, featuring closely curled outlines that define his unique artistic language.
