A Life Painted in Motion: The World of Sam Gilliam
Sam Gilliam, geboren op 30 november 1933 in Tupelo, Mississippi, en overleden op 25 juni 2022, was meer dan alleen een schilder; hij was een baanbrekende innovator die onze perceptie van wat schilderkunst kon zijn fundamenteel veranderde. Zijn reis begon met eenvoudige wortels – zijn vader een spoorwegwerker, zijn moeder een huishoudster – en een latere verhuizing naar Louisville, Kentucky, kort na zijn geboorte. Zelfs als kind werden de zaden van artistieke expressie geplant, die zich uiten in vroege tekeningen die een creatieve kracht hinted. Gilliam’s formele opleiding aan de Universiteit van Louisville, waar hij zowel een B.A. (1955) als een M.A. (1961) in Fine Art behaalde, bood hem een basis, maar het waren zijn levenservaringen – waaronder dienstplicht bij het Amerikaanse leger van 1956 tot 1958 – die zijn artistieke visie daadwerkelijk zouden vormen.
