Ramses Younan (1913–1966) remains one of the most profound and enigmatic figures in the history of modern Egyptian art. Born into a modest Coptic Christian family in Minya, his early life was shaped by the landscapes of the Nile and a deep-seated intellectual curiosity that would eventually lead him far beyond the boundaries of academic tradition. While his formal training began at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo, Younan’s spirit was too restless for the confines of classical instruction. He famously pivoted from student to educator, teaching drawing in regional schools across Egypt, a period of wandering that allowed him to absorb the diverse cultural textures of his homeland and cultivate a unique, observant eye.
The trajectory of Younan’s career is inseparable from the turbulent political and social currents of the interwar period. In 1939, he became a foundational pillar of the Art et Liberté (Art and Liberty) group, a radical collective of artists, writers, and intellectuals in Cairo. Alongside luminaries such as Georges Henein and Ikbal El Alaily, Younan utilized art as a weapon against nationalist dogma and social injustice. His participation in this movement was not merely aesthetic but deeply political; he famously signed the manifesto "Long Live Degenerate Art!", a defiant reclamation of creativity against the rising tide of censorship and narrow-mindedness that sought to define art through purely nationalistic lenses.

What truly distinguishes Younan from his Surrealist contemporaries was his rejection of pure automatism. While many in the movement sought truth through the chaotic, uncontrolled flow of the subconscious, Younan pursued a path that art historians have termed "Subject and Subjective Realism."
