The Life and Career of Daniel Schmidely
Born in Pressburg in 1705, Daniel Schmidely spent his life navigating the social and artistic circles of a changing Central Europe. He was a painter and portraitist who became a familiar presence in the local landscape. Throughout his career, his name appeared in various forms, reflecting the linguistic shifts of the era. He was known variously as Daniel Schmiddeli, Daniel Schmitteli, Daniel Schmidelius, Daniel Schmidelli, and Daniel Schmidelly.
His work was deeply tied to the people of his time. As a portraitist, he focused his attention on the faces of the nobility and the ruling families, capturing their likenesses for posterity. This professional focus allowed him to move through different social strata, from the halls of power to more private settings. His ability to translate a person's presence onto canvas made him a sought-after hand for those wishing to preserve their image.
Schmidely remained active in his craft until his death in 1780. His life spanned much of the eighteenth century, a period that shaped the very subjects he chose to paint. He left behind a legacy of portraits that continue to offer a glimpse into the faces and fashions of the mid-1700s.
Patrons and Notable Commissions
Schmidely’s career was deeply intertwined with the social hierarchies of his time. As a portraitist, he found himself frequently called upon to capture the likenesses of the era's most influential figures. His brush met the needs of numerous noblemen, and he was trusted to paint members of the ruling family, a responsibility that placed his work at the very center of political and social life in Pressburg.

Such high-profile requests suggest that Schmidely was a preferred hand for those seeking to document their status and legitimacy through oil on canvas .
Beyond the halls of power, his work also touched the private lives of the aristocracy. He contributed to specialized series of portraiture, such as the one featuring Johana de Walderode, who was painted as part of the "Ladies in Blue" collection. These commissions demonstrate the breadth of his practice, moving from the formal requirements of statehood to the more intimate, stylistic preferences of the nobility.
