Early Life, Family and Training
Winterthur, Switzerland, serves as the starting point for Adolf Stäbli, born on 31 May 1842. His lineage is rooted in the craft of engraving; his father, Diethelm, hails from Brugg, Aargau. The path toward fine art begins early. At sixteen, Adolf Stäbli leaves formal schooling behind to enter his father's workshop, beginning his first real engagement with the technical demands of visual representation.
The training shifts from the domestic sphere to the professional studio in Zürich. Between 1859 and 1861, he serves as an apprentice to Rudolf Koller. This period provides the foundation for his technical development. Following Koller's recommendation, his trajectory moves toward the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. Under the instruction of Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, his education takes on a more formal, academic rigor.
Technique and Artistic Style
The atmosphere of a landscape is the primary subject. Stäbli operates within the late Romantic period, specializing in Stimmungslandschaften, or mood landscapes. He does not merely observe the terrain; he captures the weight of the air and the tension in the sky. This focus on atmospheric intensity earned him the nickname ‘Der Unwetterer’ (The Stormy One). He finds a strange sense of ease in turbulent weather, focusing his brush on thunderstorms, floods, and the heavy movement of dark cloudscapes.
His process follows the rhythm of the seasons. During the summer months, he works en plein aire, capturing immediate sketches of the natural world directly from the source. When winter arrives, he retreats to his studio to transform these raw observations into finished oil paintings. This method allows him to bridge the gap between the spontaneous energy of a storm and the controlled composition of a studio work. He is a central figure in the German-Swiss Paysage intime movement, though his depictions lean toward the sombre rather than the inconspicuous.

Life in Munich and Italy
The death of his father, Diethelm, marks a definitive shift in Stäbli's geography. He leaves Switzerland behind to settle permanently in Munich. This move places him at the heart of a significant social and intellectual network. He finds himself within a circle of Swiss artists, moving in the same orbits as Arnold Böcklin and Otto Frölicher. This community is not limited to painters; the art historian Adolf Bayersdorfer also figures prominently in these social connections. Amidst this milieu, his friendship with Hans Thoma remains a constant presence.
The landscape of his work shifts as his travels expand. In 1882, he embarks on a lengthy visit to Italy. This period of travel provides a new backdrop for his observations. He maintains his habit of working in two distinct phases: capturing sketches en plein aire during the summer months and retreating to his studio to transform these studies into finished paintings during the winter.
Later Years and Death
The stability of his life in Munich begins to fracture after 1882. Struggles with alcoholism and the inhalation of chloroform take a heavy toll on his physical state. These dependencies lead to periods of stagnation and poverty, casting a shadow over his creative output. By 1894, the damage to his health becomes permanent.
Despite this decline, professional recognition arrives in a sudden surge of honors. In 1897, he receives a gold medal, followed by another in 1901. The recognition of his skill reaches the highest levels of the state when Prince Regent Luitpold awards him an honorary Professorship in 1898. These accolades arrive even as his physical strength wanes.
The end comes in Munich. He dies on 21 September 1901. Following his death, much of his remaining body of work is returned to Switzerland, though some pieces remain in Munich at the Neue Pinakothek.
Muziejus
Parodoma Karlsruhe, Vokietija
