    Apie šį kūrinį

The Colander II\n\nReference Image — Józef Robakowski

The black-and-white photograph shows a kitchen colander. The photographed object fills almost entirely the surface of the picture. It is lopping freely on a dark, neutral background, with the sieve down and visible chips of paint and rust. In the upper part of the handle, in the centre of the axis, near the upper edge of the picture, at the place of a hole for hanging, there is a large nail hammered into the photograph, sticking 16 cm out from the surface. In addition, the whole piece is glued to fibreboard, which in turn gives the effect of showing a colander photograph nailed to a board. Introduction: The Pioneer of Structural Film and Polish Avant-Garde

Józef Robakowski stands as a monumental figure in the history of Eastern European video art, recognized globally for his uncompromising dedication to exploring the fundamental principles of cinematic language. Born in Poznań in 1939, Robakowski’s artistic journey began amidst the vibrant intellectual ferment of the Polish avant-garde movement—a period marked by fervent debates about the role of film and its relationship to reality. He wasn't merely a filmmaker; he was a theorist, curator, and organizer whose multifaceted engagement with cultural life cemented his legacy as one of Poland’s most influential artists of the 20th century.

Early Influences and Formation: The Workshop of Film Form

Robakowski's formative years were deeply impacted by the burgeoning interest in experimental film within Poland during the 1960s and 70s. He joined forces with Stefan Themerson and Władysław Strzemiński to establish the Workshop of Film Form (Warsztat Formy Filmowej), a collective dedicated to dissecting and reimagining cinematic conventions. This endeavor represented a radical departure from prevailing artistic trends, prioritizing “pure film”—a concept championed by Strzemiński—characterized by its rejection of narrative storytelling and embellishment. The workshop’s aim was to strip film down to its essential elements, focusing on visual rhythm and spatial organization as primary drivers of meaning. Robakowski's involvement in this influential group profoundly shaped his artistic vision and methodological approach.

Experimental Filmmaking: From 6,000,000 to Conceptual Projects

Robakowski’s directorial debut came with 6,000,000 (1962), a groundbreaking film that utilized fragments of Holocaust-era documentaries—a deliberate provocation aimed at confronting the horrors of history through a cinematic lens. This early work demonstrated Robakowski's commitment to challenging conventional filmmaking techniques and exploring complex ethical considerations. Subsequent projects continued this trajectory, delving into diverse mediums including photography, video installations, and conceptual endeavors. His photographic series Photo-Painting (1958-1967) explored the interplay between image and materiality, employing double exposure and mirror-image composition to disrupt perceptual expectations. The “smithy exhibition” of 1969—featuring objects for photographing—further solidified Robakowski’s pioneering role in redefining artistic presentation and engaging viewers in active contemplation.

    Conceptual Art and Artistic Discourse

Beyond his filmmaking achievements, Robakowski cultivated a prolific intellectual output encompassing programmatic texts, manifestoes, and artist statements. Works like Calling Once Again for ‘Pure Film’ (1971), Video Art - a Chance to Approach Reality (1976), and Manipulating! (1988) articulated Robakowski's philosophical convictions regarding the transformative potential of art—specifically its capacity to destabilize established assumptions about perception and representation. He consistently advocated for a minimalist aesthetic, prioritizing clarity and precision in visual communication. His engagement with artistic discourse extended beyond theoretical writings; he actively curated exhibitions and organized initiatives like the Exchange Gallery, fostering dialogue within the broader artistic community.

    Legacy and Recognition

Józef Robakowski’s contribution to film history is undeniable. He is considered a cornerstone of structural film—a genre characterized by its deliberate rejection of narrative conventions—and one of the originators of Polish avant-garde cinema. His work continues to inspire filmmakers and artists globally, demonstrating the enduring power of experimental filmmaking to provoke thought and challenge artistic boundaries. Robakowski’s unwavering dedication to exploring fundamental cinematic principles ensures his place among the most significant figures in 20th-century art.

    Parodoma Torun, Poland

A Beacon of Modernity Amidst Medieval Grandeur

In the heart of Toruń, a city where the cobblestone streets whisper tales of medieval merchants and the scent of gingerbread lingers in the air, stands an unexpected monument to the avant-garde. The

Centre of Contemporary Art Znaki Czasu

(CoCA Tor/Toruń) is not merely a gallery but a bold architectural and cultural statement, asserting Poland's vibrant presence within the global contemporary art dialogue. Established in 2008, this institution holds the distinction of being the first museum in Poland specifically designed for the promotion of contemporary visual arts since 1939. Its location, nestled near the UNESCO-listed Old Town, creates a profound tension between the weight of history and the lightness of modern experimentation, inviting visitors to step out of the ancestral past and into a realm of infinite possibility.

The architecture itself serves as a silent protagonist in the museum's narrative. Designed by the Wrocław architect

    Edward Lach

, the building is a masterclass in adaptability and spatial fluidity. It eschews the intimidating, static grandeur of classical museums in favor of a spacious, dynamic environment capable of breathing alongside the ambitious installations it houses. For the interior designer or the lover of modern aesthetics, the museum’s structure offers a lesson in how light and volume can be harnessed to frame the ephemeral. The design embodies the very essence of its mission: to provide a flexible stage where new media, soundscapes, and physical interventions can coalesce into immersive, multi-sensory experiences.

    A Tapestry of Interdisciplinary Brilliance

What truly distinguishes Znaki Czasu is its refusal to be confined by the traditional boundaries of medium or discipline. While many institutions remain anchored to the permanence of oil on canvas or the stillness of marble, CoCA Toruń champions the "cutting edge." The collection and programming are a kaleidoscopic blend of the visual, the performative, and the digital. It is a place where one might encounter the raw, visceral power of

    Władysław Wałęga’s

Art Brut creations alongside the ethereal, technological frontiers of robotic installations. This interdisciplinary approach ensures that the museum functions as a living organism, constantly evolving through collaborations that bridge the gap between human touch and artificial intelligence.

The museum's curatorial vision frequently reaches far beyond Polish borders, bringing international prestige to the Vistula riverbanks. Visitors may find themselves lost in the mesmerizing video art of pioneer

    Bill Viola

    , whose retrospective

    Wizje Czasu

offered a profound meditation on time and consciousness, or captivated by the cinematic, theatrical journey of

    Julian Rosefeldt’s

    Manifesto

. Such exhibitions demonstrate the museum's role as a vital node in an international network of cultural exchange. Even more intimate are the explorations of language and physicality, such as the

    Embodied Word

exhibition, which challenges the viewer to perceive language not as an abstract concept, but as something deeply sensory, political, and bodily.

    A Catalyst for Creative Growth

Beyond its role as a repository for finished works, Znaki Czasu acts as a fertile laboratory for the next generation of creators. Through its dedicated artist residencies and educational workshops, the museum nurtures the seeds of innovation before they bloom into global movements. It is a space where young people are encouraged to find their voices through filmmaking, photography, and dance, ensuring that the "signs of the times" are not just observed, but actively authored. For the collector or the art enthusiast, this makes a visit to CoCA Toruń more than a mere viewing; it is an encounter with the very pulse of contemporary Polish identity—a place where the complexities of modern life are dissected, celebrated, and transformed into enduring art.
