A Life in Motion

The life of Mary Morton began in Northern Ireland, born to Captain Berkeley Morton and Elizabeth Mary Grist. In 1878, her family boarded the Lady Jocelyn, leaving the familiar shores of Ulster for the landscapes of New Zealand. They settled in Katikati, where her mother worked as a schoolteacher. As the years passed, her father moved to Auckland, and Mary’s own path began to take shape through the quiet observation of the world around her.

Between 1893 and 1905, she likely spent her time in London, receiving formal art training. This period of study shaped the way she would later see the animals that became her primary subject. By 1905, she married Charles Herbert Masters in Auckland. The couple lived on a farm in Ahipara, a setting that provided constant, close-up access to the very creatures she would eventually commit to canvas.

The Language of Livestock

Her work focused on the physical presence of animals, particularly horses and various livestock. She was often noted for painting in the style of the Fontainebleau School, a method that emphasized the natural form and character of the subject. Her commissions often came from those who lived alongside these animals, requiring a precise understanding of muscle and movement. Her exhibitions with the Auckland Society of Arts spanned decades, appearing under her maiden name, Mary E. Morton, and later as Mary Morton Masters.

Her recognition in the art community was marked by specific honors:

  • Winning all the prizes for animal painting at the New Zealand International Exhibition in 1907.
  • Securing the same animal painting prizes at the New Zealand International Exhibition in 1912.
  • The reproduction of her works, Comrades and Toilers, in the New Zealand Graphic in 1899 and 1908.

A Quiet Legacy

The end of her life came unexpectedly in childbirth on 8 August 1917. Much of her physical output was lost to a fire in a farm building after her death, leaving only a fraction of her work to be preserved. Those pieces that survived found their way into the Auckland Art Gallery and the Te Ahu Museum in Kaitaia. Her paintings remain as records of the animals that once moved through the farms of Ahipara.
