Born in 1973 in Považská Bystrica, Slovakia, Patrick Illo emerged from a landscape steeped in glassmaking tradition, yet his artistic voice quickly transcended the conventional. His journey began not within the hallowed halls of fine art academies—though he would later attend the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava—but in the practical workshops of the Secondary Glass School in Lednické Rovne. The late 1980s and early 1990s in Slovakia were periods of significant societal upheaval, marked by the Velvet Revolution and the subsequent transition from communist rule. While still a student, Illo absorbed this atmosphere of change, though his artistic response wasn’t overtly political. Instead, the newfound freedom seemed to unlock an exploration of personal expression within the medium he already knew so well.
